Odd Crops CIC (Community Interest Company)

Odd Crops CIC is a member of Sonny’s Field Collective - a sustainable food growing initiative at Kingfisher Common in Wookey. Odd Crops are developing a small perennial edible plant nursery and community garden. Our passion is promoting diversity in our food systems and giving people the opportunity to explore the wonderful world of perennial edible plants. We have volunteer days and would like to invite and welcome anyone interested in learning or getting their hands dirty to come and join in!

At the moment we are working hard to finish setting up our growing space and when we are ready we would like to run open days and workshops. The open days will involve a tour describing what we are growing and the chance to taste some of our unusual veg.

We are cultivating things like Siberian kiwi which can grow in temperatures down to minus 35 degrees. They are small kiwi's, sweeter than shop bought, and hairless (you can dehydrate them and they turn into sweets!). We have Vietnamese fish mint, which someone described as "tastes like orange and coriander had a baby". The leaves and roots are edible, also a powerful anti viral, they are used in Chinese and Vietnamese cooking. We have a range of dahlias (a very popular plant grown for its beautiful flowers) but people don't tend to know that they where originally brought to this country as a prized root crop.

These are just a few examples of the weird and wonderful plants we would like to showcase.

An important part of our vision is also to create a space to hold regular kids gardening and nature connection groups. We would like to encourage children outside, get them excited and engaged with plants and nature.

If you would like to find out more about our plans or to visit or volunteer - our email is info@oddcrops.org
